Can you admit to having felt that once you accepted God’s call to Salvation that you jumped out of the fire and into the frying pan? Guess what… You are not alone! I can recall wondering on many occasions, “What am I doing wrong…?” Well, just maybe I should have been asking, “What have I done right?”

It was not until I stumbled across the below observation Scripture, that I realized that our Heavenly Father already knew just how much we would struggle in our troubles and I rejoiced in the fact that He left on record just how we are to react towards them.

Observation:

James 1:2-4: (KJV)

2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Or

James 1:2-4: (NLT)

2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Background:

The writer of this epistle was James the son of Alpheus, who was the earthly cousin to Christ, and one of the twelve apostles. God, through James, teaches believers how we are to conduct ourselves when we are beneath our assigned cross to bear. James writes in a very instructive manner, specifically regarding our attitudes during troubling times.

Interpretation:

v2 Dear brothers and sisters, consider it an opportunity for great joy.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit of God, James began by first clarifying his audience, for this encouraging message, listen to his salutation: “brothers and sisters; “Believers” –

Diving head first into the point of his message, he says: here is “an opportunity to delight.”

v2 When troubles come your way,

When is an adverb used to ask, “At what time” or, “at what point?” Allow me to stop right here a little while to say isn’t it amazing how one word makes such a difference… imagine with me for a moment the difference of the writer’s statement should the Spirit of God had led him to use the word “if” instead of “when”… doing so would have communicated only the possibility of troubles, leaving us to wonder who would or who would not be affected. I am so very happy for the word “when!”

Now, I know that you might be asking, why?

Well, I am glad that you have asked… Answer: knowing our fleshly nature, I am certain we would somehow become even more entangled in error; associating ALL sufferings and troubles, with “sin” on the part of the believer – remember Job’s friends? There is no doubt that the word “if” would cause us to follow in their error of assuming and being judgmental more than we do already!

Since I do not mind being transparent before you, to drive this point home I will use myself as an example –there has been many times in my past where I have attempted to justify why troubles should not be bombarding my life by saying things like: “I do not understand what I am doing wrong, I am trying to live right, I am studying, praying, paying my tithes, helping others and even walking closer to God than ever before, “Why me?” Well with this scripture God quickly knocked me off that horse, which I was riding named arrogance! I should have been asking myself, Why NOT ME?

Truth: Jesus our Savior willingly chose to carry the Cross of Calvary for our sins that He could make atonement for all of mankind, once and for all; and we must not forget that it was not an easy cross for Him to bear NOR was it deserving of Him! How dare we selfishly desire not to endure any hardships, when truly we deserve death because of our own sins.

Now can we look at our “Troubles” differently, as an opportunity for great joy,” since we have put things into proper perspective? –GREAT! Then I will say no more, other than please note that the word is plural… denoting many and different kinds, and therefore we have need to put on the whole armor of God.

To count it joy (consider it an opportunity for great joy)

Now with having said all of the above, again when we look at God’s instructions for us to “count it joy.” I am certain that we cannot help but to rejoice for being quickened in our spirits, to answering the call of Christ, and to pick up our crosses and follow Him.

Matthew 16:24 - Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Moving forward should we be surprise or upset when troubles come our way? “NO.”

Why?

v3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.

Notice how James changes his tone from instructive to one of certainty – certainty of the fact that he was NOW writing to mature believers who received God’s instruction to view troubles as joy…

“For you know” Our writer now makes the supposition that WE GOT IT, that we fully understand both the purpose and the benefit of troubles.

*The purpose: is to test our faith

*The benefit: we have the opportunity to grow

Romans 5:3-5: 3And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

v4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Hear the instruction unto us, “So let it grow” – allow me to paraphrase: “simply sit back, and let it work. Do nothing to try to limit it nor to weaken it; but let it have its full reign!”

Why?

Well we are told that too: when the work of endurance (patience) is complete, then we, believers, are counted entire and lacking nothing, “Nor” wanting for nothing.

Hebrews 10:36: For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Application:

We must make conscious decisions to “stop complaining” – instead we must ask ourselves is it possible that non-believers are taking notice of our attitudes during our appointed times of troubles? If so, is it possible that through our attitudes they might seek to know the bountiful spring from where our joy flows? Answer: YES!

Additionally not only might they be compelled to know the God of our Salvation, but we should simply rejoice in the fact that in troubling times we are being developed and conformed to the image of our Savior, Christ Jesus!

Remember Charles Spurgeon’s quote:

By perseverance the snail reached the ark.

Ever felt like exploding, blowing up, going off, or releasing your full fury at an individual because of an unforeseen situation? If so, have you ever considered the fact that your uncontrolled anger can leave behind devastating results similar to a ticking time bomb when it goes off? Please stop at this very minute and think about our society today and the many disturbing reports demonstrating just this type of thoughtless, destructive behavior…

Now given the numerous news reports seen daily in the media, clearly we must see the obvious benefits of demonstrating composure (self-control) in all situations. Fact: The ability to govern (rule) one’s emotions and passions denotes wisdom (understanding, knowledge, and good judgment) and grace (refinement, polish, and poise)

Those who react without first given thought to the appropriate handling of any given situation are acting unwise; therefore the bible refers to them as fools.

Observation:

Ecclesiastes 7:9 – Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. (KJV)

Background:

King Solomon provided many examples of the vanity of this world and the things of it. In our Scripture verse today he reminds us to take care of our reputation by demonstrating prudence in the managing of all affairs.

Interpretation:

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry:

Hasty means: (quick, speedy, hurried, swift, rushed¸ fast)

Angry means: (annoyed, irritated, mad, livid, fuming)

In biblical history, we are given a grand example of a person who acted with hastiness in spirit to be angry. Walk back with me to the account of our Savior’s betrayal recorded in the book of St. Matthew.

Matthew 26: 50-53 – 50And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him. 51And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. 52Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

***Note: This biblical account recorded in the 18th book of John (verses 10-11) reveals both the Disciple’s name (Simon Peter) who acted in hast and the recipient of his destructive anger, (the High Priest’s Servant, Malchus.)

Now before we become judgmental with regards to Peter’s action, let’s be real, and transparent for a moment – as I am certain that each and every one of us can recall and admit to a moment in time when a bad situation caused a churning (agitation) to occur within us and we too reacted or strongly considered (even if for just a split second) re-acting negatively.

If ever anyone could have thought to justify his action of demonstrating hastiness in his spirit to become angry, it would have been Peter, given the situation. However clearly, Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, rebuked and deemed such behavior unacceptable.

For anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Resteth means: (reside, exist in, inhabit, remains, and dwell)

Bosom means: (the innermost and uppermost place) indicating a nearness to ones heart.

For although anger may come into the bosom of a wise man, he recognizes its entry and he lays control over it not allowing it (anger) to take up residence.

However, when anger comes into the bosom of a foolish man, he reacts in hast not recognizing nor taking the needed time to wisely control it; therefore anger rests (reside, exist in, inhabit, remains, and dwell)…being not easily parted with and lending a foot-hold to the devil.

Ephesians 4:26-27: 26Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27Neither give place to the devil.

Application:

We must learn to consider the appropriate response required from our part in every given situation that we face. This means we must slow down long enough to consider the best handling; doing so will allow us to avoid the devastating effects of simply reacting in an uncontrolled manner.

Let’s count it a blessing that God loves us enough to reveal unto us this area of needed change, in order that we may demonstrate forethought in the management of our emotions and grow in our walk with Him.

Additional Scriptures:

Psalm 37:8 – Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

Proverbs 16:32 – He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Psalm 15:18 - A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

Something is simply therapeutic about cleaning; like freshness, clarity; and order established. Now if this is true in principle about the physical realm of things relating to tangible (material) items, would it not hold true in the spiritual realm regarding non-tangible items? Absolutely!

Think of it this way, the same way we faithfully perform regular spring cleanings in our homes, we must also perform regular spring cleaning in our spirits… indeed there are many obvious benefits of implementing this principle so we will use it as a stepping stone in our lesson today.

Observation:

Isaiah 1:16-18 - 16Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Background:

Written over seven hundred years before the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; the Prophet Isaiah addresses the sinful condition of Judah with an earnest call to repentance and restoration, setting before them (and us) life and death…

Interpretation:

(v 16) Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

Did you notice how we are given a lot of verbs (action words) in our Scripture text?

Wash (cleanse), Make (create), Put away (tidy up), and cease (stop)

Have you ever notice that before we are called to service our Heavenly Father always deals directly with us first? Each item listed above describes a personal act calling for us to perform a self evaluation to identify and abandon our sins. It is a call to repentance and restoration, with the sole purpose of reconciliation unto God first and foremost.

Sin is corruption to the soul. Our goal must be to wash ourselves from it by repenting of sin and turning from it unto God. This spring cleaning must first take place in order that our prayers are answered and our service and sacrifices are accepted.

James 4-8 - Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

(v 17) Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Did you notice again, many verbs (action words)?

Learn (become skilled at), seek (look for), relieve (help), judge (referee), and plead (beg).

Still we are being called to act, but notice how our actions are now requested in an outward manner as it relates to others; a shift from repentance and restoration to service.

See it is not enough that we cease to do evil, but we must learn to do well, this is necessary to the carrying out of our repentance.

It reminds me of one of my favorite Scriptures – Luke 22:31-32 - 31And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

After Peter repented and was reconciled unto God He was called again to service. The same is true for us.

(v 18) Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Most often we desire to be used in service by God; however we must acknowledge His Holiness – and first become reconciled unto Him through the humble act of repentance. It is the freshness, clarity; the order established through repentance that allows us to again commune with God! Then and only then are we able to hear His loving invite, “You are welcome to draw close to me; come now, and let us talk the matter over.’’

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Application:

Just like there are certain cleaning products required when we are attempting to perform a Spring Cleaning in your physical homes. The same is true for our Spiritual Spring Cleaning as well… Your product: “The cleansing BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST.”

If you have NOT invited Jesus Christ into your life as your personal Lord and Savior, my prayer at this very moment is that God’s Holy Spirit will open your eyes and your heart to be receptive to His love, His forgiveness, and His plan of salvation! God desires a relationship with YOU!

Please take a moment to read the following Scriptures because it is important for you to understand that there is absolutely NOTHING you can do to on your own to cleanse your soul and earn salvation. It is a free gift from God.

(John 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

(Romans 3:23) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

(Romans 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(Revelation 3:20) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

(Romans 10:9–10) If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

If you would like to obtain eternal security and be brought back into a right relationship with God the Father, you must accept Jesus into your heart as your personal Savior. Stop and pray this prayer from your heart:

Prayer of Salvation

Father God, I admit to you that I am a sinner, and I confess that I have sinned. Please forgive me, and cleanse me from all my sins. I believe that Jesus is your Son and that He died on Calvary’s cross and rose from the dead for me, and I accept your gift of forgiveness through Him. I confess my faith in Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and I ask Jesus to come into my heart.

Thank you, Lord, for your gift of salvation! Thank you for your love and your mercy. Amen.

Now celebrate your new life in Jesus Christ!

John 15:3 - Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

As we look at the caption and the picture together, we see a group of young people having a discussion. What is the topic you may ask? We can only imagine. Is one of them telling the others about an exam they just aced in school, or maybe a new job they acquired after graduation? Whatever the situation, I know initially you had to take a second glance at the title, and it prompted you to think to yourself, “really?” Is that what God wants me to do? Well great! That was indeed the reaction that I was hoping to obtain!

Yes, I firmly believe that bragging is a good thing….that is, “As long as you are bragging on God!”

Clearly today our lesson will cover the topic of “talking BIG about God in ALL things.” Sit and let it marinate.

Do you think to put God first in every positive discussion you have? Even if it is not so positive, can you put an affirmative spin on a conversation by acknowledging that God is in control of absolutely everything? I invite you to walk with me as we learn together.

Observation:

Psalm 105:1-2

1O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. 2Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. (KJV)

Or

1 Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. 2 Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds. (NLT)

Background:

Written by David and delivered to Asaph to be used in the daily service of the sanctuary when the ark was fixed in the place. (Taken from the blue letter bible study tools)

Interpretation:

O give thanks unto the LORD;

To give means (to offer, present, convey, or render)

We are instructed to perform a deliberate action, which means there is a focused, determined, purposeful, intent involved. Not only are we told what to do, “give” but additionally we are told what to give; that is, “thanks.” As well as who’s the recipient, “God”

This topic, is one that I am very excited about since it is actually the basis of my upcoming Book entitled, “Destined to Live, Despite Me- A Cause to be Thankful,” (expecting to publish this fall)

In the book I went into detail regarding the ever so common display of an attitude of entitlement verses an attitude of thanksgiving which has crept into our society… Allow me to share a short excerpt with you from the book:

The Encarta Dictionary provides the following definition of Thankfulness: is an expression of gratitude; an acknowledgment of a favor or a gift that one has received from another.

The word “Thank” is from the same root as “Think” which means: instances of deliberate thinking, to conceive in the mind, to consider, and intended. So to thank someone requires the process of using one’s mind to form an intentional thought and to consider what is being done, has been done, or given unto you.

In our lesson today, this is exactly what our writer, David commands us to do; recall everything, that God has done for us and allow those thoughts to prompt an outward response of thanksgiving. Let’s examine our observation Scripture closely.

Call upon his name:

Daily God blesses us with unimaginable favor despite our sinful acts. Why? Because He loves us and He longs to have first place, which He rightly deserves in our lives.

Allow me to ask you a question, “During both good and bad times who do you call upon to share with?” Now, of course after we answer this question it seems to automatically lead us to the next question of, “Should this person be the first person whom we call?”

Answer: NO

Listen to what Psalm 116:2 says: Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. (KJV)

We must acknowledge that it is God who keeps, hold, delivers, and blesses us, so it is upon Him that we should call! This is true in all situations….both good and bad.

Make known his deeds among the people.

How often do we esteem others, by showering them with a multitude of compliments… not to forget how selfishly we do the same unto ourselves; yet why is it that we neglect to do so in all things when it relates to God?

Hear the words written in Deuteronomy 6:4-7

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (KJV)

Fact is: If we truly consider the multitude of blessings and mercies granted unto us by God we should be quick to identify Him as the appropriate person worthy of our praise and shout it off the rooftops unto the whole world!

Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him:

To sing means to resonate, vibrate, ring, echo; our writer encourages us to buzz unto God in song and poems and praises. Leaving a suggestion of continuously!

1 Chronicles 16:23 says: Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. (KJV)

2 Samuel 22:50 says: Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. (KJV)

Talk ye of all his wondrous works.

Words are ever flowing from our lips – let’s make certain our words are geared to give God the glory!

Psalm 44:8: In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah. (KJV)

Application:

Never brag nor boast in yourself, recognize that you are NOT in control of anything, God is. Humility demands that we recognize from who our blessings flow.

Make a conscious decision to move forth and put into practice all of the action verbs in our lesson today: Give, call, make, sing & talk about the things, which God has done for you, and He will continue to richly bless you!

I recall a time in my life when I started a countdown relating to my last child
graduating and going off to college. YES, I thought only four more years to go as I sat documenting a preparation plan, which listed annual tasks to complete to prepare our home to sale. You know things like: cleaning out all closets and gathering all of those old clothing pieces, which I had held with the intent of one day fitting back into. I had planned to call my local donation center to schedule a pick up for items to be donated. Repainting the walls in every room to create a crisp splash of colors, and performing massive spring cleaning projects would finalize my plans!

Oh how excited I was at the thought of downsizing! I thought to myself, “How nice it would be to purchase a smaller home with much more land instead, in order to purchase a couple of horses, and maybe a cow or two…” then without notice, it happened. The phone rang and the caller stated that a very close family member had just passed away; gone home to glory to be with the Lord, and we were being called upon to raise two of six children in order to help keep them within close proximity of each other. Well, it goes without saying that before I knew it, we were on auto-pilot and years passed before I ever picked up my preparation plans again…

Indeed this is how easy unplanned interruptions occur in life and this is just another small glimpse into a season in my life, which God used to bless me and my entire family. Well I would like to use this experience to walk us in today’s short lesson in obedience.

Observation:

(KJV- King James Version)

1 Kings 17:10-15:

10So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. 12And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. 15And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

Background:

Our supporting Scripture picks up after the Prophet Elijah, exhibited GREAT faith in our God! So great a faith, that God responded to Elijah’s prayer by fire on Mount Carmel before all of Israel, 450 prophets of Baal, and 400 prophets of the groves, which ate at Jezebel’s table; causing the people’s heart to turn back unto God. We now find Elijah coming to the end of one season where God hid and cared for him in the miraculous manner of being fed by the ravens at brook Cherith after he killed the 850 prophets of Baal, and the beginning of a new season were he has now being instructed to go to Zarephath, to find the widow who would sustain him. (1 Kings 17:1-9)

Interpretation:

A Request of provision:

(v10) “Would you please bring me a little water in a cup?” (v11) Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

Elijah obeyed God’s command by going to Zarephath – but not only was he walking in obedience, but he was walking in “expected anticipation or FAITH” to encounter just who God said that he would encounter “widow woman who would sustain him”

Let’s put a pin right here for a short moment for self evaluation: Can you truly say that you walk in faith with the same, “expected anticipation” of what God has promised you?

Her move into action:

11And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her,

Immediately we find the widow responding in action to Elijah’s first request of water without hesitation.

Her response of her lack of provision and her outlook:

However in the following verse when the prophet requested bread we must take notice of the development of her responses:

First she communicated her lack of provision

12 But she said, “I swear by the LORD your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. And I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug.

Second she communicated her outlook

I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die.

Her act of obedience:

13And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. 15And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah:

She received and believed by faith the promise of God spoken through His Prophet and moved in faith by doing accordingly.

Application:

(1) Demonstrated by the widow at Zarephath, regardless of our condition or circumstances, we can always obey God by sacrificing to help others.

(2) We must be willing to surrender our plans and our wills under God’s will for our lives.

Results:

Because the widow stepped beyond how she saw herself and moved in faith of God’s promise we are told that: She, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

Author’s remarks:

Now you know that I could not possibly end this lesson without telling you how my family story concluded… our nephews whom my husband and I are blessed to call our “sons” brought more love, kindness, and joy into our lives than we could have ever imagined. We are proud to say that both have graduated from high school, and one is now married and expecting his firstborn child and the other is currently in college completing his studies with dreams of one day becoming a State Trooper. About a year after totally forgetting about my initial plans to sell our home, the housing market spiral out of control causing us to be even more so grateful for the place we call home even unto this day.

Well, you can only imagine how very surprised we all were to find that she had flip flopped the celebration and had became the “Gift Giver” instead of wanting to be the recipient of our gifts and kind accolades!

To our surprise, as we entered into the restaurant we notice that she had placed gifts before each table setting with personalized cards for each of us whom she deemed instrumental in her life. Literally she had turned her own birthday celebration into a, “Thank you for being in my life celebration!”

Oh what intimate moments we each shared that day as we took turns reading aloud the personalized cards, which we later found out that she had typed months prior, expressing her gratitude unto God, for allowing our paths to cross. Our hearts filled with joy and of course our eyes with tears, as we basked in the specialness of the moments, which God had predestined! Truly the birthday girl ensured that she had redeemed her time well, by extending roses to the special people in her life while still alive.

Well with this experience still romancing my spirit, I ran home with a short lesson in mind for you, my dear readers.

Please note: I was drawn to the below historical Scripture Text as our supporting scripture verse because it demonstrated two points, which I wanted to highlight: 1) every person who enters into our lives are important; 2) regardless of the length of the season, they remain.

Observation:

Ruth 1:14 – And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. (KJV)

or (NASB) version:

Ruth 1:14: And they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.

Background:

Famine had hit the land of Canaan. Elimelech, Naomi’s husband moved his family (his wife and two sons) from Bethlehem into the country of Moab on the other side of Jordan – where after his death his sons intermarried with the women of that land. Our lesson text picks up after both sons had also died, leaving behind Naomi and her two daughter-in-laws whom she had just ordered to go back to their families.

Interpretation:

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again:

Here in our Scripture text we find two women holding the exact same position in the life of Naomi; left on record only a few short verses prior (Ruth 1: 1-5) we will find much information given: 1) Naomi’s daughter-in-laws were both from the same place; 2) both held the same length of time within her life, ten years; and 3) both were, as she was, now widows.

Additionally we are given great insight into the bond, which had formed between Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah, which is seen by their overflow of sadness. Look again and notice that we are told that they, “lifted up their voices” with a series of tears, “and wept again.”

And Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

Interestingly enough despite both of Naomi’s daughter-in-laws demonstration of emotions we later see two opposite outcomes…Orpah kissed Naomi goodbye and returned to her family and unto her gods, while Ruth we are told clave (clung, hugged, gripped) Naomi, refusing to depart from Naomi or her God.

Application:

How many of us know that some people are only intended in our lives only for a season, while others are intended for the long haul?

We must learn that everyone who enters our life has been allowed by God for a reason and a season. Now regardless of the length of time they remain (short or long); we must learn to appreciate the contributions, which they bring with them whether good or bad. (1) If our experiences with them were bad, we must acknowledge the lesson being taught to each of us about being a friend to an enemy. (2) If our experiences were good, we must appreciate the value and express this value unto them while they are alive.

I encourage you to take time to express your gratefulness unto God first; then take time to give roses (expressions of appreciation; the value), unto those in your life who are important for that, which they have brought into your life before the opportunity passes away.

Results:

Your relationships, both with God and your fellowman will gain intimacy!

I pray you have enjoyed –

Regardless of our vocation in life the word “Responsibility” isn’t foreign to us… each of
us has the power to positively impact the lives of others within our circle of influence. Today we will review a few duties assigned under our care as Disciples of Christ.

Observation:

1 Thessalonians 5:14: Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Background:

Paul’s first letter to the church at Thessalonica: The main scope of Paul’s letter was to establish the church in the faith, and list several duties of great importance.

Interpretation:

Now we exhort you, brethren,

Paul, after discussing in the previous verses the importance of having holy conversations, uses the word “now” to shift from advising believers at Thessalonica (and us) not only in what we “say” but also advising us in what to “do.”

Warn (admonish, caution, advise, and counsel)

Easily identified within our society there are those who chose to walk contrary to all rules and laws; the same is also true within the body of Christ. We must not pretend that once a person is saved all disobedient acts have miraculously disappeared. On the contrary, we all know those who still battle with fleshly desires to act unruly (by both words and deeds within the Church), those who step out of their ranks and stations. Paul encourages all mature Christians, to not leave the responsibility solely to our Church Leaders to correct disobedient behaviors, but instead for us to take an active part ourselves in warning and admonishing those who do such things. The importance of addressing these behaviors, allows the disobedient person to be instructed straightforwardly for their sin allowing them also a chance to repent and correct their actions, in order that they do not cause injury to their own souls, and preventing them from hurting others.

2 Thessalonians 3:6: Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly,
and not after the tradition which he received of us.

2 Thessalonians 3:7: For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

2 Thessalonians 3:11: For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

Comfort (console, reassure, and relieve)

Mature Christians are also instructed to encourage those who are timid, faint-hearted, fearful, depressed, and sorrowful in spirit. We all should understand how sometimes situations can cause people to shy away, (become afraid) due to difficulties. This can be quite disheartening and cause injury to a person’s spiritual growth and their self esteem. We are called to not look down on others when this occurs, but instead comfort them; moreover who knows what good a kind and comfortable word may bring?

Isaiah 35:4: Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

Hebrews 12:12: Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

Support (hold up, prop up, bear, and sustain)

Take a moment to reflect on a time when you have felt simply overwhelmed in life; whether by your plate being too full, limited finances, or relationship problems. Whatever the cause, I want you to recall the emotions, which engulfed your spirit during those times. Why? Well like always, I am very glad that you have asked…

Many times others feel the same exact way we have felt and they too are sometimes unable to hold up under such burdens. We who are strong and mature are called to support others and help them in their infirmities. This should leave a picture of us positioning ourselves at one end lifting their burden, in order to help them bear it. It is by the grace of God, that we can help strengthen others, while letting them know that we are doing so NOT by our strength, but by His!

Acts 20:35: I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Romans 15:1: We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

Be patient (endure, tolerant, uncomplaining and long-suffering)

Oftentimes when injury occurs to us, we tend to become upset using the age old cliché “I am only human too” to justify moments of anger. But we who are followers of Christ must learn to tolerate and suppress feelings of anger regardless of the situation; exercising the thought process of positive thinking toward all men, and making the best of every situation to bring Glory to God.

1 Corinthians 13:4: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Application:

Being a Christian is less about verbally communicating to others that we are, but more about allowing our lives to demonstrate our beliefs and our confessions.

Our Lord and Saviour said it like this:

John 13:34-35: 34A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

The other day as I was rummaging through a few old photo albums, and I ran across the ones, which contained the building of our home. I was amazed as I reminisced over the full process which we were able to capture, from the builder separating our section of land, to the turning over of the ground, and to the laying of the foundation. As I sat smiling I remembered how under all of the brick, mortar, and wood laid the inscription of all of our names and the words, “God Bless this Home” (the day they poured the foundation we quickly made it here before the cement dried.)

What a wonderful moment God allowed me to recall regarding the foundation of our home!

Now I am certain that you know me well enough by now, to know that I compare almost everything physical to the spiritual aspect of our lives, so today we will review the “Foundation of Faith”.

Observation:

Colossians 1:22-23: <sup>22</sup>In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: <sup>23</sup>If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Background:

Here we find the Apostle Paul writing to the church at Colosse summing up the Christian doctrine.

Interpretation:

V 22In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Verse 22 reminds us that Christ’s death upon the Cross of Calvary, made atonement (paid the price) for the sins of all mankind. Hebrews 9:22: 22And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. The gift of salvation is offered to all who’s willing to receive it “by faith” in Christ.

Based on this text when we receive the gracious act of Christ’s sacrifice we are placed under the new terms of the Covenant of Grace with our Heavenly Father.

V 23If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel

Notice in verse 23, the text begins with the word “If”, which mean a stipulation, a condition, and a qualification to receive the promises in the previous verse…

If we continue in “Faith” we will be presented by Christ holy (righteous) and unblameable (not guilty, faultless) and unreproveable (perfect) in the Father’s sight

But our lesson text does not stop there; we are even told how to continue in faith: grounded and settled and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel

Grounded:

Definition: (foundation, appointment)

Strong’s Number: 2311 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Themelioo”

Phonetic Spelling: them-el-ee-o’-o

Settled

Definition: (established, developed¸ matured, and complete)

Strong’s Number: 1476 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Hedraios”

Phonetic Spelling: hed-rah’-yos

Be not moved

Definition: (not to be moved from its place, unmoved, metaph. firmly persistent)

Strong’s Number: 277 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Ametakinetos”

Phonetic Spelling: am-et-ak-in’-ay-tos

V<sup> 23 </sup>which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

The latter part of verse 23 specifies to whom the Gospel has been or will be preached unto in a fulfilling manner over time, which excludes NO ONE. Additionally we must remember the command given in Mark 16:15: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Lastly our verse ends with Paul, the writer of our scripture text, clarifying the blessed privileged of being called a minister of the Gospel of Christ. Now please do not think that Paul is boasting in a prideful manner but instead see the gratefulness of his being called to such an office.

Application:

My dear reader’s faith is the key which unlocks the door to Salvation!

Additional Memory Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:58: 58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Jude 1:20-21: But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Hebrews 10:23: Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)

Hebrews 10:39: But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

1 Peter 1:9: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Recently my husband and I were blessed to have all four of our grandbabies, at one time, for what we call “Nanna and Papa Time”. As we sat and basked in the gratitude that God had allowed our lives to continue to see the next generation, we observed each of their little personalities as they played together. We were simply amazed to see the stubborn (immovable, willful, and inflexible) characteristics, which each of them demonstrated at one time or another during this visit as well. Thinking to myself, how can this quality benefit them for the kingdom building purposes as they grow up? I was taken to the following text in my quiet time:

Observation:

1 Corinthians 15:58: Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Background:

Written in the first Epistle to the Church at Corinth; the Apostle Paul, under the direction and influence of the Holy Spirit of God, gives a serious exhortation to Christians everywhere to be resolved and diligent in our service unto the Lord, that we may be rewarded by Him.

Interpretation:

Because our observation scripture starts with the word “therefore” we automatically know that we must read the prior verse(s) to obtain a full understanding of our observation scripture. So please go back with me a few verses to 50-57 and you will find that we are given the topic of discussion, which is, “The doctrine of Resurrection.” Now that you have read the verses for yourself let’s move forward with the interpretation section of our lesson.

Therefore, my beloved brethren

Paul specifically uses a gesture of love toward those whom he writes.

Be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord

Stedfast

Definition: (established, developed¸ matured, and complete)

Strong’s Number: 1476 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Hedraios”

Phonetic Spelling: hed-rah’-yos

Unmovable

Definition: (not to be moved from its place, unmoved, metaph. firmly persistent)

Strong’s Number: 277 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Ametakinetos”

Phonetic Spelling: am-et-ak-in’-ay-tos

Always abounding

Definition: Always (at all times) abounding (above a certain number or measure, to be over, to remain, to be great (abundant), a thing which comes in abundance, or overflows unto one, something falls to the lot of one in large measure, to be abundantly furnished with, to have in abundance, abound in (a thing), to be in affluence, to be pre-eminent, to excel, to excel more than, exceed, to furnish one richly so that he has abundance, to make abundant or excellent) wealthy, affluent, rich, well-off, well-to-do, flourishing, thriving, and successful)

Strong’s Number: 4052 Greek word in the New Testament, is rendered “Perisseuo”

Phonetic Spelling: per-is-syoo’-o

Forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Our observation Scripture appears to be an exhortation with an underlying motive. It’s like saying, “Because you know.”

Application:

We cannot allow our faith to be shaken, instead we must be fixed in the faith of the gospel, which is that Christ died for our sins, and arose again the third day, according to the scriptures. Because we are believers of Christ, we must believe also in the doctrine of resurrection of the dead; as this is also our future.

Our souls are anchored in HOPE; we cannot allow anything or anyone to move us from the comfort of our expectations in the promises of God. (see below Heb. 6:19)

Our focus should be to exhaust all efforts in the kingdom building process which is the Lord’s work. We must do it with all zeal and diligence, always seeking to obey the Lord’s commands.

*When we stand fast to our faith in the atoning work of Christ Jesus we know with absolute certainty that our labour will not be in vain. We shall inherit eternal life!

Additional Memory Scriptures:

Psalm 16:8: I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Colossians 1:23: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Hebrews 6:19: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

Romans 8:18: For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

When was the last time someone reminded you of the importance of being simply satisfied with the provisions of each day? It’s been a while huh…

Because we live in a society, which clamors for increase, it is more likely that you have been recently advised/reminded how to make more money, gaining the highest return on your investment, and the “how too” of achieving fast gains. Now please do not get me wrong when I say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with growth; as a matter of fact we are told in the book of Ephesians that our Heavenly Father is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20)

Since we know that there is a healthy balance to absolutely everything, today we will review and discover what it truly means to be content.

Observation:

Philippians 4:11-13 – Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Background:

We find the Apostle Paul a prisoner at Rome, in A.D. 62 taking tender care to write to the church at Philippi; a church he had a part in planting.

Interpretation:

Content means to be: satisfied, happy, pleased, and at ease

Content (To Be), Contentment: The Greek word in the New Testament is rendered: “autarkies” Pronunciation: (au-tä’r-kās)

This Greek word is found in the papyri writings, means “sufficient in oneself” (autos, “self,” arkeo, see A), “self-sufficient, adequate, needing no assistance; “hence, “content” taken from Strong’s Number g842

Not that I speak in respect of want: – Paul starts by clarifying that there was nothing he so desired, craved, or even wished for. In essence he was declaring his satisfaction with the provisions of each day based on the providence of God each day.

For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. – Paul, once know as Saul, before his Damascus road salvation experience, studied divinity and the Jewish law under his prior tutor by the name of Gamaliel, who was a well-known Pharisee – these studies gain Paul extreme knowledge; yet here in our scripture verse we do not find Paul giving an account of that learning experience, but instead the wisdom gleamed from being a servant at the feet of Jesus.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: – Learning to experience happiness (to still consider God’s many blessings) in every condition of life is indeed an on-time message for this day and age. Paul demonstrates that he did not allow the devil to stop his praise regardless of his varied circumstances. Such a declaration you must know is a special act of grace, manifested by the Spirit of God, our Comforter!

Every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. – Although he was in bonds, and imprisoned, and beaten, listen attentively as the Apostle Paul conveys his comfort in God’s supreme care, whether his belly was full or hungered, whether he was experiencing increase (luxury) or stripped of his common comforts – He knew NOT to attempt any roundabout method to supply his own needs but instead to wait on God sufficient supply.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. – To be certain that no one within the Philippians’ Church (nor us today) might mistakenly think that Paul was boasting of himself, from when he declared “I am instructed (I know) to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need; Paul takes the necessary time to clarify the source of his strength… I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Application:

Do you find that it is only when things are going good, that you are more often a worshiper, a friendly person, or cheerful; compared to when something goes bad?

If your answer is yes, please do not beat yourself up, but take a moment to repent of this sin. (Ask God for forgiveness, with a heart-felt desire of changing this behavior).

Why?

An attitude of discontent demonstrates dissatisfaction, displeasure, and disgruntlement with that which God has provided for you. I know personally that this is a very hard lesson to learn, but the fact is: none of us, truly know anything about suffering – which is why we are learning the topic of “contentment” together. Here are a few scripture text to aid us in our growth:

Ephesians 6:10 - Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

2 Timothy 2:1 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 3:16 - That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Hebrews 13:5: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

1 Timothy 6:6-8: 6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

We must hide in our hearts this truth: Nothing happens to us that God isn’t first aware of and hasn’t allowed; and if it has been allowed He already has a plan of escape!
