And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? –Luke 17:17

The Bible gives an account of how Jesus healed ten lepers.

But only one returned to express thanks.

Choose today to be like that one!

Have you ever considered how often we neglect expressing genuine gratitude? The bank teller. The store clerk. The person driving our kids to school. The restaurant waitress. The mailman. Even the customer service representative who takes our call—we may offer a casual “thank you” out of habit, but how much more impactful would it be if that thanks was a genuine acknowledgment of and appreciation for their efforts?

What if we took that renewed spirit of thankfulness and applied it to our relationship with God?

Using the Biblical story of the ten lepers as a reference, A Cause to Be Thankful by Yolanda Shanks will unpack the Biblical model for thankfulness, showing how a spirit of entitlement has overshadowed our spirit of thanks. In this straightforward and challenging book, you will not only learn how to return as the one leper who expressed gratitude, but you’ll come away with a clear plan for including consistent and genuine thanks in your prayer life and day-to-day encounters.

What People are Saying!

I found this book to be inspiring at a time when I needed to be inspired. Most Christians have no trouble in thanking God for all He gives them during wonderful times; however, they are often tested, as were Biblical characters, during times of turmoil and stress. I was going through a difficult time with a sick wife when I began reading this book. I have been praying for her for years–not just for months, weeks and days–and there were times I had to acknowledge my human weakness, sometimes feeling God was invisible. After reading this book, I began to think of all the things that God has given me and continues to give me. I immediately began thanking God and thought about the fact that I could go to Him in prayer as a privilege and blessing. There is comfort in reaching out to God for strength and feeling Him respond with love. I believe my wife will be healed and have been thanking and praising God for this belief that He alone instilled in me.

This book teaches many things to readers who are willing to allow the Holy Spirit open their eyes to the truths of the Scriptures that Shanks quotes. It teaches readers to be kind to others…that this should be routine; part of that kindness is showing gratitude. I realize this review is personalized but this is only a glimpse of how this book affected me and opened my eyes to see past the temporary darkness. I recommend it to all readers who continue to search for and apply Biblical truths to their lives. They need to rejoice and praise God!

Yolanda Shanks in her latest A Cause to be Thankful is trying to show us how to study and understand the how and why behind being thankful and why it is so important in our lives and in our world today as we know it.

A simple thank you out of habit should do more than waste expendable energy. The recipient should feel the weight of your words and believe it wholeheartedly through and through. The author has the perfect illustration of this by using the Bible of the ten lepers. She takes this story and outlines a purpose of heartfelt and sincere thanks that in this day and time we should all learn to use as well as give away to others.

Each chapter is outlined in this way:
Background: The explanation or interpretation behind the Bible verse being referred to.
Observation: What we can examine from the explanation or verse we are studying about.
Interpretation: How to understand the observation and decide in deeper thought what is going on in said verse or chapter.
Application: How to apply this to me and my daily life.
Prayer: Ending each chapter with a prayer to help absorb what was read and learned.

The author has given me quite the perfect Bible study for my life right now. I’m sure many of us could use a deeper study on thankfulness.

Jenifer King says…

Let us find a cause. Jesus – thats my cause. I want people to see Him when they look at me. And that will never happen, not with the power that it could have, if I am always whining and complaining.
I need to tame my tongue – I need to be wise in the words I speak. For my family; I need to remember that I am a witness and I am, more importantly, His.
Reading A Cause to Be Thankful reminds us of how important it is to be thankful for all we have, in the good times and in the bad times. Even more, let us show our love and faith by being thankful in the midst of the storm.

Let us examine our heart; pray that He may cleanse us – Search our hearts and show us where we are needing to grow. That we may glorify Him in all that we do.

I’m relatively new to Ms. Shanks writing but I can guarantee that this won’t be the last thing I read of hers. The author takes the topic of thankfulness and comes at it as a suicide survivor. Applicable for everyone she uses strong foundations of scripture to relate how our society is a greedy, selfish, thankless generation.
The author also has a whole chapter on the road to salvation, making this a perfect resource for those that are just coming to know God AND those who need a reminder of his faithfulness and love.
Although a “short read” this book is packed full of biblical truths and will have you thinking long after you finish reading – and on your knees thanking God for His goodness, mercy and grace.
